Enjoy a unique full-day experience and immerse yourself into the lushness of the central mountain region of the island. Prepare for a scenic drive through the countryside roads, spectacular mountains, and panoramic views to find one of the most unique and mystical places on the island. River trek to a serene and secluded water pool and be astounded by a hidden canyon leading to a beautiful waterfall. Marvel at the stunning towering volcanic rock cliffs uniquely sculpted throughout centuries by the passing of the river and admire the view of a majestic mountain at a distance completing this picture-perfect setting. Finally, explore the area and find petroglyphs carved into rocks centuries ago by our Taino ancestors and sense the connection with nature they had. This, for sure, will be a memorable day.
This tour requires a certain degree of physical fitness, balance and river trekking and basic swimming skills.
What to Expect/Itinerary
Get ready for an early start heading to the Northwest mountain side of PR.
1After a one-hour highway drive, our first stop will be on a local food stand to enjoy a coffee break to get ready for the upcoming adventure.
2Now, fully awake and happy, we will head to the heart of the mountains driving through limestone formations. You will notice the change in the island’s geology, and explore a beautiful, barely known, nature spot. There you will river trek, work out climbing up rocks, and enjoy a secluded water pool protected by rock walls. You will be amazed as you swim by a hidden canyon to a magnificent waterfall. It is truly a spectacular place, full of peace and surrounded by greenery.
3After this fantastic exploration, the next stop is a stunning canyon made of giant volcanic rocks carved by the passing river, and an impressive mountain at a distance acting as the custodian of this incredible place. Here you will learn about the history, beliefs, and legacy of our natives, the Tainos, and also why this area was sacred to them. Rock boulder and river trek as we explore dozens of petroglyphs carved on the rocks centuries ago, and let your imagination run wild with all the possible symbolisms. There is something mystical about this place; whether it is the feeling of becoming one with nature, the uniqueness of the scenery or the kindness of the neighbors. Utuado will, for sure, become one of your favorite places in Puerto Rico.
4Having already worked an appetite after hours of exploration, is time for an authentic lunch at the town center before heading back to your hotel.

What to Bring
- Swimsuit already on and towels (2 per person)
- Change of dry clothes and shoes
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, hats and sunglasses
- Cash or credit card to buy food or if you wish to offer a gratuity
- Comfortable clothing to river trek and swim. Leggings for ladies and swim shorts for gentleman are recommended
- Comfortable non slip water shoes to hike in water and over slippery rocks (no hiking boots)
Tour Info
- Confirmation will be received at time of booking.
- Not wheelchair accessible.
- Will be operated by a multi-lingual guide (Spanish and English). Tour might be offered bilingual in case needed.
- Children must be eight years or older to participate and accompanied by an adult.
- Additional transfer fee from towns outside of San Juan/Metro area will apply (each way).
- Participants should have a medium to high physical fitness level, must be capable of walking thru inclined, rocky, slippery and uneven surfaces without assistance.
- We strongly recommend having good breakfast before pick-up at hotel and bring snacks. We will have lunch around four to five hours after pick-up. If you have any special dietary restriction, please notify at time of booking and bring your snacks.
- Please keep in mind that we will be walking under the sun for an extended time. Please bring anything you need to keep you protected against the sun.
- Not recommended for participants with heart complaints, back problems, recent injuries or other serious medical conditions.
- Not recommended for woman past their first trimester or persons with mobility limitations.
- If you have a service animal you have to notify it prior to booking the experience, since other participants in the tour might have asthma or allergies to pets danders.
- This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.
- This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund.
